Luke 1:45 – December 21, 2020

Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” Luke 1:45 NABRE

Mary is surprised by the angel Gabriel and learns of God’s plan to send his Son, with Mary honored to be His mother. Mary hears of Elizabeth’s pregnancy from the angel Gabriel and travels to see Elizabeth helping her in the last three months of her pregnancy. Elizabeth is surprised by Mary’s visit but filled with the Holy Spirit pronounces “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (Luke 1:42-43) Elizabeth’s words become a prayer spoken by many who follow and love the fruit of Mary’s womb, Jesus. Mary has found favor with God and lives a life doing God’s will. It begins with Elizabeth’s recognition that Mary believes and trust God. She believes that God wants her to be the mother of His Son. She travels to Elizabeth because she knows her cousin will understand what is happening to her. Travelling to Elizabeth is a way for Mary to affirm what she has been told. Knowing that Elizabeth also has been touched by God to have a child after years of being barren and unable to have children, strengthens Mary. The two ladies are filled with the Holy Spirit and live according to God’s will. Their belief is depended upon by God to fulfill His plans for humanity.

We are challenged to believe in God. We are called to live in a manner that God can depend on us to do what we are able to move His plan. God’s plan is not always known but living a life of prayer and saying yes to God is the best way to participate and help. When God calls you, believe, and say yes!

Do you say yes to God? How committed is your belief?
