Isaiah 45:2-3 – December 17, 2020

I will go before you and level the mountains; Bronze doors I will shatter, iron bars I will snap. I will give you treasures of darkness, riches hidden away, That you may know I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who calls you by name. Isaiah 45:2-3 NABRE

God speaking through the prophet Isaiah announces that Cyrus King of Persia is His instrument in freeing Jewish exiles. God declares to the people that He will ready the way for them to return quickly, safely and easily to Jerusalem. Often when a king is to travel his servants will go ahead to level the trail. Making the road smooth, removing all obstacles along the way. The king travels in a grand retinue, likely riding in a stiff and bouncy carriage, the road must be smooth for the king to ride comfortably. God tells the people He is going before them to level the mountains, God is going to smooth the path and make the journey comfortable as if the people are all kings. God will shatter the bronze door, meaning the gates of Babylon guarded by solders defending the city gates, God shatters the gates. God not only goes before them He will give them treasures from the hidden treasury of their conquerors. God does all this so the people will know He is their God, the God of Israel that calls His people by name. All people will know God, even the pagans of Babylon who see the captured people, punished by God for their unfaithfulness, now treated like kings.

God is a God of good and evil. God may punish but also rewards. God’s intervention on the behalf of the people will be seen as radically generous and merciful. God loves His people and will treat them like kings, giving them treasure, making a smooth way for them. We are God’s people who are treated the same.

Do you accept God treating you as king? Have you seen radical generosity?

God loves His people and will treat them like kings, giving them treasure, making a smooth way for them. We are God's people who are treated the same. Click To Tweet
