Matthew 11:16 – December 11, 2020

To what shall I compare this generation? It is like children who sit in marketplaces and call to one another, Matthew 11:16 NABRE

In this section of Matthew’s gospel we read what Jesus’ mighty deeds indicate about His identity and how people respond; some believe He is the Messiah, others respect Him as a prophet, others reject Him and His message, even the religious leaders accuse Him of having the power of Satan. We read Jesus accusing this generation of unbelief. How Israel responds to Jesus is not how He hopes, Jesus seeks people who repent but few actually take this message to heart. When Jesus speaks to this generation it seems to address the people who are alive as He is speaking, but this phrase can refer to all unfaithful generations. It calls to mind the generation of Noah’s day, and the unfaithful generation that was denied access to the Promised Land. Generations over time have not repented, not taken to heart the message of Jesus.

If we are being honest I think this can be said about today’s generation of American’s. We seem more interested in freedom, independence and acquiring the worldly things that we think makes us happy, then in following a message of “love one another.” We can recognize just in the politicization and debate over following guidelines concerning how to fight the Coronavirus as an example where we think our personal freedoms are more important than the care for others. A community that loves others is willing to give their life for another’s– friend or foe. Jesus hopes that we accept love in our hearts. If we truly are disciples of Jesus we much prefer to care for one another than have freedom to not wear a mask, or eat dinner out, or attend large parties. Are we to the generation Jesus thinks is unfaithful?

What do you think of your generation? Do you think Jesus sees us as faithful?
