Matthew 6:21 – December 1, 2020

For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be. Matthew 6:21 NABRE

Jesus is teaching His disciples how they should approach material possession and necessities of life. Those who seek first the kingdom have a peaceful confidence in the Father to provide for their lives. Disciples serve God alone, not possessions or to gain access to more and more wealth, rather we should be storing up treasure in heaven. Wealth and possessions are mere treasures on earth, not a solid foundation for one’s life. Many of us seek security in storing up earthly riches, Jesus reminds us that these are unstable and perishable. But Jesus’ teaching goes beyond a simple critique of materialism. He ultimately asks all disciples, “Where is your heart?” The heart is the center of one’s life, from where attentions and commitments flow. The person preoccupied with accumulating treasures on earth is not free to serve the Father’s kingdom fully because their heart is weighed down by concerns of this world. Jesus stresses that disciples should store up treasures in heaven. We can stores treasures in heaven by sharing the goods of this world with those in need. He tells them where you treasure is, there also will your heart be. We know this! What is most important to us is what we attend to regularly, perhaps our home, car, the “toys” we have like a boat or motorcycle. If these get our attention more than those in need, we are at risk of collecting treasures that will not last. Jesus warns us against this waste of energy and lack of development of a future that will be eternal.

What is important to you in this life? Even our family Jesus tells us should come after our attention to the kingdom. This surprises us, but Jesus wants us to put our trust in the Father for our and our families security.
