Job 37:5-6 – November 10, 2020

God thunders forth marvels with his voice; he does great things beyond our knowing. He says to the snow, “Fall to the earth”; likewise to his heavy, drenching rain. Job 37:5-6 NABRE

The Book of Job is about a man who seems to suffer for no reason, but in the end remains faithful and trusts God. Some say the story is a similar story to Jesus’ life and message. Job loses everything and several of his friends come along to help him understand. In this section of the reading a man named Elihu speaks to Job and points out that the transcendence of God is far superior to humanity’s and humanity can find God even in the midst of suffering. Job has argued that God has treated him unjustly and Elihu declares God is a supreme authority and is answerable to no one, particularly in regard to the creation of the universe, God acts in complete freedom and God cannot help but love what He has created and treat creation kindly. We, as Job, may not always understand God’s reasons for allowing the things that cause suffering. Some say because God allows free choice suffering comes from the decisions and actions of humanity. One bad choice effecting another and another and so on until someone gets an illness or dies through the actions of others years before or miles away. God however is a marvel, He creates by speaking. At God’s speaking snow falls as well as heavy rain.

Hillsong has a wonderful song; So Will I, which mimics this sentiment. The chorus is:
And as You speak
A hundred billion galaxies are born
In the vapor of Your breath the planets form
If the stars were made to worship so will I
I can see Your heart in everything You’ve made
Every burning star
A signal fire of grace
If creation sings Your praises so will I.
I recommend you give it a listen on YouTube.

What do you think about suffering? What do you create with your words?
