Luke 13:20-21 – October 27, 2020

Again he said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed [in] with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch of dough was leavened.” Luke 13:20-21 NABRE

Jesus is in the synagogue speaking to the people about the kingdom of God. Jesus’ message tells of a kingdom where God is in command and people will find a wonderful and happy place to belong. Jesus can’t say exactly what the kingdom of God is like because He depends on humanity to help create it. So Jesus uses parables to describe what the kingdom of God is like. This parable describes a woman who mixes in a small amount of yeast which will leaven an entire batch of dough. Bread bakers will understand this comparison, a small amount of yeast will affect an entire batch of dough, doubling even tripling it in size. But there is also the littleness of the yeast that is part of the example. Jesus is telling us something you barely see has a tremendous effect, good or bad. He has spoken to the religious leaders who think more of themselves then the people of God, here the yeast turns the entire batch bad, or more specifically how a small amount of hypocrisy from them exposes who they really are. For those doing good a little yeast changes a little good into an entire person doing good, or an entire tribe doing good, or entire kingdom being good.  Jesus message is a little good can go a very long way, in fact Jesus believes the kingdom of God can and will encompass the entire world.

The kingdom of God depends on followers of Jesus to do for others as Jesus has done, to care for others as Jesus has cared, it depends on all of us putting others first. The kingdom of God is a kingdom of love acted upon by each person for each and every other person.

Have you made bread with yeast? Do you allow a little good influence you?
