Luke 9:58 – September 30, 2020

Jesus answered him, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” Luke 9:58 NABRE

Luke begins telling of Jesus journey to Jerusalem, His final journey. Jesus must have much on His mind about how things are going to end during the Passover celebration. As Jesus journeys, people want to make commitment to Him and His message. One person approaches Jesus and says I will follow you wherever you go. Jesus responds, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” Jesus indicates if you want to follow Him you give up everything that will hold you back from being completely free to share the message which Jesus has come to proclaim. In this response Jesus is trying to make the potential disciple know the sacrifices he will make to be a disciple of Jesus. He will even be asked to give up house and home to be a disciple. Jesus’ example even foxes and birds have “homes,” but Jesus does not have any place, He is truly an itinerant preacher. It is not that Jesus doesn’t think safety and security are important, but for Jesus all the security and safety needed comes from trusting God. Having a home, to maintain and support can be a distraction from sharing the Word of God. Anything that can become an attachment, something in our lives that takes priority over being a disciple can be an impediment to living the Word of God. Jesus is honest about becoming a disciple, they will make sacrifices, their life will be different from those who are not disciples.

We must be careful to not have things that keep us from focusing on Jesus. We need to be able to live; but certainly luxuries and prosperity are better used for the message then ourselves.

What are your attachments? Can you give everything up for Jesus?
