Isaiah 46:4 – September 10, 2020

Even to your old age I am he, even when your hair is gray I will carry you; I have done this, and I will lift you up, I will carry you to safety. Isaiah 46:4 NABRE

While exiled in Babylon the Hebrew people are impressed with the idols of the Babylonians and there is serious risk of their falling into idolatry. In this oracle Isaiah contrast the greatness of God with the worthlessness of idols. It begins by taking pleasure at and even mocking of the destruction of the Assyrian-Babylonian gods – Bel the god of the heavens and Nebo the god of wisdom, useless things incapable of saving anyone, even needing to be carried to go from place to place. In contrast to these gods, the God of Israel carries His faithful. God carries the faithful borne by God, carried from the womb; even in old age, when our hair is gray, God carries us, He has done it our entire life, lifting us up and carrying us to safety. Isaiah will begin to reveal the downfall of Babylon, the leader Cyrus the Persian will free the exiles who will return home. God takes care of His people every moment of their life and to have any other god is like the false gods mocked by Isaiah who need to be carried in order to move from place to place.

This passage should encourage us to count our blessings. We often think we make our own good fortune or make our own luck, we should be more aware that it is God who carries us. God’s presence in our world helps us make it through the green lights safe and causes the red lights to slow us down when necessary. We might think we are having a difficult year, but we have blessings, many people have died and been sick but we are still here, living a life that provides food, warmth, health and love. Life has changed but these are still true. Thanks be to God.

Do you count your blessings? Do you realize God is carrying you?

It seems a difficult year, but we are blessed; many been sick and died but we are still here, living a life that provides food, warmth, health and love. Life has changed but these are still true. Thanks be to God. Click To Tweet
