Matthew 24:42 – August 27, 2020

Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come. Matthew 24:42 NABRE

Jesus is speaking to His disciples about many things. He begins to speak to them about being prepared for days of tribulation in which Christ will return. He begins to focus on the day, the hour in which Christ will return. Jesus uses the story of Noah and the days of flood as an example; many were eating and drinking and only Noah prepared for the coming flood. There are those who say others should have taken notice of Noah’s preparations and done something themselves to be prepared. Jesus says these people did not know until the flood came and carried them away. He compares this moment to the coming of Christ, no one will know when it will take place. Two people working in a field and one will be taken and the other left, two women working on a mill and one will be taken and another left. So Jesus tells them “stay awake!” No one knows the day when the Lord will come. We must be ready to withstand the judgement of a just judge. No cramming for a final exam, we will stand before judgement with our history known and our good deeds examined. We may be counting on a merciful God to overlook some of the things we have done or said, or not done or not said.

We are living in a time when it is obvious how much we do for ourselves and how much we do not do for others. If we look at the coronavirus as a measure of our willingness to sacrifice our own desires, we can imagine we have failed as a nation. The USA has so many cases and so many deaths it is obvious we haven’t sacrificed enough personally, through quarantine and social distancing to stop the spread.  To love others we would self-sacrifice to save lives, which is shown doing everything we can to stop the virus.

How have you self-sacrificed in this time of crisis? Are you prepared for Christ’s coming?
