2 Corinthians 10:17-18 – August 17, 2020

“Whoever boasts, should boast in the Lord.” For it is not the one who recommends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord recommends. 2 Corinthians 10:17-18 NABRE

Paul writing to the community at Corinth is addressing boasting, some have been boasting about their accomplishments. Paul warns that what really matters is not self-commendation but the commendation that comes from the Lord. Paul wants to stay away from comparing himself with others and recommends we do the same. By comparing ourselves to one another we do not take into consideration the most important standard of all, namely God. By declaring our own success we do not understand the criteria for success, a criteria that only God can provide. We know that Jesus’ way is not to be successful as the world knows success, but Jesus’ success comes from losing. The cross was a success because Jesus let others win. When we boast we tend to use criteria of the world and not criteria that comes from the kind of success God seeks. Paul declares if you are going to boast, boast in the Lord. Our boasting cannot claim the success that God is responsible for providing, we are merely instruments in God’s overall plan. Rather than boast about ourselves we must recognize all glory goes to God. Who does God approve, not the one who recommends himself but one who takes on the characteristic of his very obedient Son, Jesus.

How do we take on Jesus’ characteristics; we become poor in spirit, we mourn, we become meek, we become righteous, we become merciful, we become pure of heart, we become peacemakers, and we are persecuted for righteousness. When we take on these qualities then God will recommend us and God’s boasting comes with glory.

Do you boast for yourself? Do you compare yourself to others?

How do we take on Jesus' characteristics; we become poor in spirit, we mourn, we become meek, we become righteous, we become merciful, we become pure of heart, we become peacemakers, and we are persecuted for righteousness. Click To Tweet
