Matthew 10:40 – June 28, 2020

Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. Matthew 10:40 NABRE

Jesus is speaking to His disciples and us, about what it takes to be disciples and what it means to be disciples. Jesus speaks to His disciples about being emissaries for Him. It follows a tradition that is long standing and would have been familiar to those He was speaking to at the time. Similar to an ambassador of a country, representing that country, speaking for the country and relaying information back to their country. Speaking to the emissary is speaking to the person who sent them. This is Jesus’ message, anyone receiving Jesus’ disciples is receiving Jesus Himself. We read in another passage of Jesus’ teaching, “Whoever rejects you rejects me.” (Luke 10:16)  So it is a significant role to be Jesus’ disciple, He tells us we go in His name, His emissary and when we are received we are received in Jesus name, as Jesus would expect to be received. Jesus explains further receiving Jesus is receiving the one who sent Jesus, God the Father. Jesus sends His disciples as His emissaries and Jesus is the one who is the emissary for God the Father. Behind all the preaching and healing is Christ Himself and so to accept the teaching of Jesus disciples is to accept Jesus Himself.

It is important as a Christian to live and act as Jesus would live and act. Because not only are we sent as Jesus’ emissaries but people look at us as followers of Jesus and expect to see what it means to be disciples of Jesus and a person who lives with Christ within them. If people don’t see Jesus in us, they will wonder why they want to be a follower themselves.

Do you live as Jesus emissary?  Do people see Christ in you?
