So they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you testified, here he is baptizing and everyone is coming to him.” John 3:26 NABRE
John the Baptist, herald of the coming of the Messiah, points to Jesus as the one. John’s role is to let people know Jesus is the promised one. John baptizes, people come to John in large numbers as they see him as holy and special of God. People travel several miles to be baptized by John. Jesus Himself came to John to be baptized and receives affirmation from the Father and the Holy Spirit. John’s disciples, helpers in John’s ministry, were in a dispute about Jesus and His disciple’s apparently baptizing people. They ask John to help resolve the dispute. The passage doesn’t explain why they bring it to John, do they want him to condemn Jesus who he has already exulted, do they want him to have Jesus stop baptizing which they believe is John’s mission, or do they want John to declare Jesus as just another of his own disciples? We read Jesus is confronted similarly when His disciples tell Him that others are driving out demons in Jesus’ name (see Mark 9:38). Jesus doesn’t want them prevented and John will not prevent Jesus and His disciples from baptizing. John uses the question to further elevate Jesus and declare Him the Messiah. From this point John decreases.
We might have concerns about denominations of Christians different from us. But shouldn’t we be glad that people are sharing the message of Jesus? We can’t control what people come to fully believe as Jesus followers, but we should be the inspiration for people to begin to learn more and become a believer in Jesus. There is no need for Christians to disagree with Christians, there is plenty to do for everyone.
Do you mistrust other denominations? Do you invite the lost?
