The prophet Jeremiah is speaking about messengers who put themselves forth as prophets who simply tell the people what they want to hear, to increase their popularity. Jeremiah denounces wrong doing and breaking of the Covenant and is opposed by these false prophets. Jeremiah begins oracles against the sinfulness and wrong doing of these prophets. God did not call these prophets and the people should be careful about who they listen to and what they believe. We hear God speaking through Jeremiah, there is no hiding from the eyes of God, He is able to know all the happenings of heaven and earth. God knows false prophesy, prophets speaking from their dreams. God declares false prophets will be justly judged and it will come with eternal reproach and eternal shame. Jeremiah speaks out against false prophets and false shepherds. God wants prophets and shepherds who will lead His people correctly. Those who lead the people astray will pay dearly.
Today we don’t have prophets in the sense of people sent by God to speak to His children, since the coming of Jesus God speaks to everyone individually. But we still have leaders who are responsible for the people, Pastors who lead the people and who are meant to do the will of God. There are those who put their own agenda above God’s will, be it through politics, or only telling the people what they want to hear. We see this in Sunday messages and we see it in religious leader’s supporting a particular political party. God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow and so we know these false leaders who push their own agenda will meet a God who has already said He will judge them justly.
