Psalms 46:11 – June 11, 2020

“Be still and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, exalted on the earth.” Psalms 46:11 NABRE

This is a psalm about the presence of God. No matter what may happen in the world or our life, God is never far and always ready to help in time of need. The psalm opens by speaking about natural calamity, the earth shaking as in an earth quake and the psalm proclaiming for the people; there is no fear because all refuge and strength comes from a God who is very present. So even if there is a flood, even if the nation is in turmoil, the Lord is with us, His dwelling is in Jerusalem, the city of God for those at the time of the psalm writing. In other words God was so close they could go to Jerusalem and be with God. Today we know we have God even closer, in the form of the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, and Christ who is always present in our lives. The quoted verse tells us how to find God, to be still and know God is God. Many people who  pray in quiet contemplation have been known to use this verse as the opening to their prayer, repeating a few times, “Be still and know that I am God.” In the stillness God comes to us and reassures us, no matter what is happening around us, in our life, our town, our country, our world, God is the one who is exalted and has the ability to let us know we are going to be fine. God will lead us to peace.

We tend to let the events of the day, the news, social media postings control our thinking and force a reaction. People tend to have an agenda, and part of their agenda is to get you unsettled about what is happening so you will let them lead you to their resolution. God wants to lead you to the right resolution for you. You are God’s only agenda.

Do you let events disturb your peace?  Can you be still and know that God is your God?

People tend to have an agenda, and part of their agenda is to get you unsettled about what is happening so you will let them lead you to their resolution. God wants to lead you to the right resolution for you. Click To Tweet
