GOD, my Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet swift as those of deer and enables me to tread upon the heights. Habakkuk 3:19 NABRE
Habakkuk is a man deeply steeped in Israelite faith. He believes God, the sovereign Lord, rules the destinies of nations and takes special care of the chosen people. He is the Lord of heaven and earth and He rules everything with holiness and justice. He is the only God, a living God. Habakkuk discerns the truth of God’s presence in the world. Understanding the revelation of God, including the events and past fortunes and misfortunes of Israel. Habakkuk is prophesizing around the time of the great Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem and the temple, He sees these events as God’s punishment on the disobedience of the people. This is a challenge to Habakkuk’s thinking. Why would God use the Chaldeans (at times rulers in Babylon) as a means of punishment? It is a question that plagues Habakkuk. This small book is Habakkuk’s conversation with God an attempt to answer this question. In the final chapter Habakkuk comes to praise God and sings of God’s appearance in majesty above the earth. Habakkuk ends by reasserting his trust in the Lord and rejoices in God who saves. It is a true believer who never loses hope in God, but presses on joyfully to the heights (or high places) a place of superiority over those who have tried to undermine him. It is the journey from doubt to certainty.
This certainly allows the faithful believer to look at everything in a new light. While things remain the same, they look different because we look at everything with the eyes of trust and love in God. As a believer our life is converted to a life of constant prayer, joy and never ending peace. All we do is an act of thanksgiving for a God who gives us everything.
