His disciples said, “Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech. Now we realize that you know everything and that you do not need to have anyone question you. Because of this we believe that you came from God.” John 16:29-30 NABRE
Jesus is teaching His disciples about future events, the hour is coming when they will no longer see Him. Then he tells them the Father loves them because they have loved Him and that He is leaving the world to return to the Father from whom He has come. The disciples seem to always have a lack of understanding before the Easter event. We read that they think they have finally recognized Jesus speaking plainly with word’s they can understand. Jesus wants the disciples prepared, He will be sending the Spirit with many gifts and they will recognize Jesus’ glorification. But this is not anything they have understood. When they think they finally do understand, they make a proclamation of faith, they believe Jesus knows everything and that He has come from God. But it seems it is more out of trust than true understanding or faith. They say Jesus knows everything and there is no need to question Him. It seems they are trying to convince Him they understand and there is no need to say anymore, even they have no need to question Him who has come from God. They will go forward trusting but not truly understanding. We see this when it is time for Jesus to suffer and die as each of these saying they finally understand disappear and scatter from fear and a true lack of understanding.
Many of us have the same difficulty understanding Jesus. The disciples did not truly come to understand until they received the Spirit. We need the Spirit as well to understand. Pray for the Spirit to come.
Do you say you understand something when it is not entirely clear? Do you pray for the Holy Spirit to come?
