Romans 12:10 – May 24, 2020

love one another with mutual affection; anticipate one another in showing honor. Romans 12:10 NABRE

The highest obligation of a Christian is to love others, and to love one another, unconditionally. Paul is stressing the point that our love should be selfless, sacrificial love. Love is the lifeblood of the moral and spiritual life. It means we must be willing to do what is best for another no matter what the cost is to us. Christian living is a pattern of faith that is demonstrated through love. These acts of love are not meant to be superficial, or intended for those whom we like or our family. We are called to love everyone including those we have trouble tolerating, or those unable to be called a friend for any reason. Our Christian charity must be sincere, not just a show for outward appearances. It should be genuine, Christians should hate what is evil, and what we find good should be prized and grasped eternally. Paul stresses to love one another with mutual affection, a type of brotherly love, showing charity between one another. We should not only give what they ask for but we should anticipate their needs and show them honor in our charity and love. If we are able to bring honor to another, it builds their respect and we have a true brother or sister that will always be depended upon. Just as they can depend on us because they know we are followers of Jesus.

@andy_stanley puts it, “we should do for one what we wish we could do for all.” We don’t need to bankrupt ourselves, our effort should be for one other whose life is better because of our love and affection for them. If we all join together and do for one, then all the one’s we do for, will be collectively loved.

Do you love one another who is not someone close to you? Can you do for one?
