John 14:18 – May 21, 2020

I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. John 14:18 NABRE

Jesus speaking to His disciples a final teaching before His passion, death and resurrection promises them He will not leave them orphans. It is beautiful language, Jesus is telling them again they are His children and the children of the Father, and He takes a personal responsibility for their lives. Jesus knows and has told them He must go away, he will die and He will go to the Father. He is foretelling them that when this happens, they do not need to be afraid because He will come back to them, after the resurrection. Of course He does die and return, and they are surprised, despite hearing this message. The risen Jesus lives forever and He will enable the disciples to share in this eternal resurrected life, they will live as well. The day of resurrection will be a great moment when the disciples realize who Jesus is and that they will be included in a divine communion. The relationship between the Father and Son is a bond of indwelling, the Son is in the Father and the Father is in the Son and this same relationship will be created between the risen Jesus and His disciples. They will be in Him and He will be in them.

We are included in this message. Jesus does not leave us orphans, He will come for us. We have the same ability to join in the divine communion between the Father and the Son, to have God dwell in us. We only need to have faith in Jesus and show our faith through love and obedience. When we accept Jesus into our hearts and commit ourselves to life as a disciple, we become a child that will never be orphaned, God will come for us.

Do you accept being a child of God? Do you look forward to divine communion?

When we accept Jesus into our hearts and commit ourselves to life as a disciple, we become a child that will never be orphaned, God will come for us. Click To Tweet
