Ezekiel 36:25-26 – May 8, 2020

I will sprinkle clean water over you to make you clean; from all your impurities and from all your idols I will cleanse you. I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:25-26 NABRE

Ezekiel the prophet paints a picture of a restored Israel. We read his prophecy of hope; nothing is impossible to the Lord, He is able to renew Israel, He can make people come back to life and the unity between this new people and their Lord will be almost the way things were in Eden, so wonderful that it will astonish nations. Ezekiel’s teaches the Lord is above all things, He is the one who determines the election, punishment and restoration of His people. The people have an obligation to accept the gifts God offers, they must acknowledge that the Lord is sovereign and free, rendering Him due worship. This teaching is the announcement about restoration and return to the Promised Land and is the Lord’s promise of inner renewal. Ezekiel views the renewal of Israel from the perspective of divine worship, sprinkling with water and other purification rites being a sign of inner change. Then Ezekiel tells of a new heart and a new spirit, a renewal affecting a person’s disposition (heart) and motivation (spirit.) The Israelites will have a new life force, as a result their conduct will be perfect.  This change comes through God’s initiative, the renewal is begun and completed by God.

We see the same things as followers of Jesus, from God we receive the Son who came from God’s love for us. “In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins.” (1 John 4:10)

Do you trust you are renewed by God? Do you accept a new heart and spirit from God?
