John 13:20 – May 7, 2020

Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.” John 13:20 NABRE

Jesus has just washed the disciples feet, giving them an example of service. Culturally, washing feet is something below Jesus and even below the disciples. But for Jesus, service and humility are important characteristics. He tells the disciples that what He has done they must also do. It is a lesson that will live with them. We have likely never washed another’s feet, but in the time of Jesus it was an important service when entering a home. The roads and paths would have been quite dusty and dirty and so bare feet and feet with sandals would have become quite dirty. It was the job of the slave to wash the feet of the guest and people of the home as they enter from the days walking. So Jesus is essentially telling his disciples that they are to be slave to all others, to lead by serving. And then he tells them they are being sent. He will not bring the message of the gospel to the world, that is up to the disciples, they are sent to share the story of Jesus’ life, to tell people about the Jesus they know and to wash the feet of others. Jesus says they are sent and whoever receives them receives Him and who ever receives Him receives the one who sent Him, the Father. Jesus is making the disciples His representatives on earth, delegating His authority to them.

As Jesus sent those first disciples we who are followers are sent in a special way as well. Anyone who receives us does so in the name of Jesus and in the name of the Father. We are meant to be servant to others, to essentially wash the feet of those who we speak to about Jesus. Most importantly we are to live in a way that represents the one who sent us and who sent Him.

Do you have a servant heart? Do you represent Jesus when you meet others?
