Philippians 2:8 – April 28, 202

he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Philippians 2:8 NABRE

Paul is speaking to the community in Philippi about being like Christ, having the same attitude and approach. Paul includes what some have called an early Christian hymn, a rhythmic poem that speaks of Christ as one who serves through obedience, becoming a slave, human, humble and because He did, God exalted Him, bestowing on Him a name above every name, everyone should profess Jesus Christ is Lord. It is a beautiful hymn that seems to flip in the middle after the quoted verse where He is declared humble, obedient to death, a death on the cross which was looked at as a death for the most retched sinner, certainly not the death of a holy Jew. We get a sense of the Suffering Servant from Isaiah, particularly; “Therefore I will give him his portion among the many, and he shall divide the spoils with the mighty, Because he surrendered himself to death, was counted among the transgressors, Bore the sins of many, and interceded for the transgressors.” (53:12) Jesus, Suffering Servant took on life and death for others and God exalts Him.

Jesus walked, enjoyed, and suffered the entire human journey and He told us that we could and should do the same. Throughout His life Jesus spent no time climbing, but a lifetime of descending, emptying himself and becoming as all humans are (Philippians 2:7.) Like Jesus we carry our suffering, united with Him and with all humanity. Sometimes we can’t even name our own suffering, we just carry it. Jesus’ life tells us we are not alone. All suffering is our suffering and God’s suffering. If we recognize all suffering and crucifixion happens in “one body” we can expect that we don’t have to worry, we all join Jesus in universal resurrection.

Do you suffer alone? Do you want to join your suffering with God’s?
