Mark 16:6 – April 12, 2020

He said to them, “Do not be amazed! You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Behold, the place where they laid him.” Mark 16:6 NABRE

Mark tells what happens early on the first day of the week when the sun has arisen, the Son has arisen, as He said He would. Three unlikely people are witness to the fact that the tomb is empty, Mary Magdalene, Mary, the mother of James, and Salome, coming to properly anoint the body of Jesus. They have no idea about what they will see, they are more concerned with how they will move the stone closing the tomb. No matter what Jesus said beforehand, no one is prepared to find an empty tomb and a risen Jesus. It was just beyond anyone’s thinking that Jesus who dies such an excruciating death would be alive as he promised. So as the women discussed how to move the stone, they are greeted with an open, empty tomb and a young man sitting as if waiting for them, we presume he was an angel. He said to them, “Do not be amazed! You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Behold, the place where they laid him.” Women were not trusted as witnesses in the days of these events, yet in all the stories of Jesus’ resurrection it is women initially who learn Jesus rose and are sent to tell Jesus’ disciples. These three women are sent back to tell Peter and his disciples to meet Jesus in Galilee, where it all began. They left bewildered, trembling and afraid but we have to believe there was more hope leaving the tomb then there was coming to the tomb.

Jesus words on the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” receive an answer. God has not forsaken Jesus or will He ever forsake us. The life of a disciple is promised triumph if you believe; He is risen, Alleluia, Alleluia!

Do you believe He rose? How do you receive Jesus on Easter?
