Philippians 2:7 – April 7, 2020

Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, Philippians 2:7 NABRE

Paul writing to the community at Philippi is said to be quoting a hymn that has become known as the “Christ Hymn.” A hymn that existed which Paul applies to Jesus. It speaks of Jesus taking the form of humanity, a humbling from His place alongside God as divine. Jesus does not deem equality with God rather He took the form of a slave. Not that being human is compared to slavery, rather it is a great contrast between being divine and becoming human. A way to see this is Jesus incarnation as a man is a conscious decision to not be God, but to live as we humans live so that we may know our Lord is aware of all we go through in life. Jesus is seen as humbling Himself, being obedient to death. Though Jesus came as lowly, God highly exults Him, even to the point that everyone should kneel at the mention of His name; Lord. We are told these things about Jesus because we are to have the same attitude. When we consider the first sin, taking of the apple against God’s will, this was a sin that enticed Adam and Eve because they believed they could become gods by eating the apple.

How often do we want to be the most important in a setting, or looked at with high esteem, called upon as the most, or best in any situation. While it is good to be strong, powerful, intelligent and wise, God wants us to enter every situation with humility. We should not be seeking glory but pointing to God as the one who deserves all glory. Jesus’ entire life pointed to God with obedience, honor and living out His will, not Jesus own. We are challenged to do the same.

Do you seek power or humility? Are you seeking the same attitude as Jesus?
