1 Peter 1:23 – March 31, 2020

You have been born anew, not from perishable but from imperishable seed, through the living and abiding word of God, 1 Peter 1:23 NABRE

Peter is writing to the communities in Asia Minor, new Christians who are growing and becoming disciples. Peter in the section with the quoted verse has been speaking about love, brotherly love, sisterly love, the love of people in a common community, a new family. He then addresses this idea of being born new. We have a first birth from human seed and then we have a second birth from imperishable seed, from the seed of God. In the parable of the sower Jesus explains, “the seed is the word of God” (Luke 8:11) The contrast is between natural human generation and spiritual generation. The “seed” which has produced a new birth in Christ is not perishable, as human seed is. Rather, the seed that is the word of God is living, it possess life and gives life, it will never lose its power, it is abiding, enduring. It is a seed because it grows. It begins through a process of conversion completed in baptism. John writes, those who accept Him “were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision but of God.” (John 1:13) Jesus teaching Nicodemus says, “What is born of flesh is flesh and what is born of spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I told you, ‘You must be born from above.’” (John 3: 6-7)

Our first birth comes from Adam and then we have a second birth which comes from the Spirit and the Word of God. We are called to love and we have the ability to love because we are from a supernatural origin. Our love is not just of human effort but derives from what God has sown in us through His Word which does not grow old or perish. Nurture your imperishable seed, let it become a mighty tree.

Do you understand this message? Do you nurture your seed?
