Jeremiah 17:8 – March 21, 2020

They are like a tree planted beside the waters that stretches out its roots to the stream: It does not fear heat when it comes, its leaves stay green; In the year of drought it shows no distress, but still produces fruit. Jeremiah 17:8 NABRE

Jeremiah provides oracles of truth in this section of a book about him. Jeremiah lived during an important period, he saw the fall of the Kingdom of Judah and the destruction of Jerusalem by the forces of Babylon 587 BC. A seeming end of his world. But in the quoted verse Jeremiah is speaking about those who trust in the Lord. They are like a tree planted beside waters that stretches it roots to the stream, it has no fear of heat and it’s leaves are green, even in a year of drought it shows no distress and still produces fruit. We see three things in the tree, it is well-rooted, it bears fruit and it is sustaining life. We are in a time of drought and we should learn from the tree. To be well-rooted it must be well watered, so like we hear on airplanes take care of yourself first, put your oxygen mask on then help your children. The tree is still bearing fruit, it is receiving water and life and so it still has the ability to bring fruitfulness. We should be doing the same, don’t wait for this to be over, put pressure on yourself to be helpful, or to create, let this time be used to bear fruit in your life. The tree is sustaining life, its leaves are green and its fruit blossoms, we should be doing the same, reach out to others, be positive, encouraging, helpful. Bring life to those who, maybe are more impacted by what is going on than is necessary.

We are planted by living waters, our roots reach into the life of Jesus and we have life. Let this rootedness give us the life and fruit to not only outlast this time but outshine this time.

Are you fruitful now? Do you depended on your rootedness?

We are planted by living waters, our roots reach into the life of Jesus and we have life. Let this rootedness give us the life and fruit to not only outlast this time but outshine this time. Click To Tweet
