1 John 5:14 – March 10, 2020

And we have this confidence in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 1 John 5:14 NABRE

John is concluding his first letter, he closes saying he is writing so that his hearers might know they have eternal life within them, he speaks about our confidence in approaching the Father in prayer, first for our own needs and then for our brothers and sisters who have become entangled in sin, finally he reminds us of the truth we know; we are born of God, we belong to God and we abide in Jesus Christ. In the quoted verse John wants us to be assured that going to the Father in confidence, anything we ask according to His will, will be heard. If we are in relationship with God then we must have confidence to approach God with our needs. Earlier in the letter John already assured us that we can approach God confidently in prayer (see 1 John 3:21-22.) In this verse John adds “we must ask anything according to His will.” We should ask for things that are consistent with what God has already revealed as His purpose and will. This could include praying for the material goods we need to live, asking to grow in faith, love, holiness and unity and for the salvation for those we love. This means we should seek the things that are God’s will for us now. Since we are in communion with God we can ask confidently and know God will do what is best for us in our asking.

Jesus taught about a personal God, a Father we can approach, a Son who walked the earth living more for others than Himself and a Spirit that provides strength and force to do the things we know are according to the will of God. John tells us having this personal relationship with God we can be confident speaking to God, always seeking God’s will. As Jesus teaches, others first.

Do you go confidently to God? Do you put God’s will first?

We should seek the things that are God's will for us now. Since we are in communion with God we can ask confidently and know God will do what is best for us in our asking. Click To Tweet
