Psalms 19:7 – February 28, 2020

From one end of the heavens it comes forth; its course runs through to the other; nothing escapes its heat. Psalms 19:7 NABRE

Psalm nineteen proclaims the glory of God through all creation. God is revealed in creation. But in this psalm the psalmist proves six ways that the comprehension of God came through the study of the “Torah” (the Five books of Moses) The Torah, often referred to as law; is perfect, it restores the soul, it is trustworthy making the simple wise, it is right rejoicing the heart, the commands are clear enlightening the eye, the fear of God is pure enduring forever, the judgments of God are true and just, all more desirable than gold. We see in the quoted verse the comparison to the sun. The law is like the sun, its qualities proclaim the glory of God. The sun comes up over the horizon and goes through to the end of the sky, every day rising in one extreme end of the eastern sky and setting in the extreme end of the western sky. Nothing escapes its heat. The rays of the sun reach every place on earth without exception, even though their intensity is not the same. The psalmist does not say that nothing escapes the light, shade can be taken from the light. But even if someone were in the deepest, darkest, hole in the earth, the heat of the sun would still have an effect, at least warming the air of the earth. For the psalmist this is how the law impacts those who know it and more so with more understanding. There are many levels to the sky and we are happy that God has placed the sun in the precise place needed to provide life and not destroy with its heat, like the Word.

The psalm focuses on Torah, and today we know every Word of God has the ability to effect and teach us. Jesus provides more knowledge about God than all creation.

Does the Word radiate in you? Do you desire knowledge of God?
