Jesus answered and said to him, “Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him.” John 14:23 NABRE
Jesus is speaking to His disciples during the Passover meal, the last one He would celebrate with them. He is sharing many things, teachings He wants His disciples to have and remember. Obviously they did a good job remembering because John, one of His disciples is able to remember it all so clearly it is written down and shared with us thousands of years later. We read these things in the gospels of Jesus, meaning good news. We have these teachings and we believe these teachings not because Jesus was a smart man who said many smart things no one would ever forget (though that is true.) In fact much of what He teaches is the opposite of what we would demand of someone intelligent; He says love your enemies, if someone slaps your cheek offer them the other cheek to slap, and many others. We wouldn’t believe Jesus teaching because He died and was not supposed to. In that moment no one believed anything He said because they didn’t believe He would die and yet He did. However we come to belief because He rose again after dying. He even predicted this was going to happen. Now everyone who stopped believing in Him began to believe again, even more strongly than they believed in Him previously. We see in the quoted verse that if we love Jesus we will keep His word, and He and the Father will love us and dwell in us. The God of the universe who is all good seeks to dwell in us. Our only requirement is keep the word Jesus taught, which we would want to do anyway.
Belief in Jesus means we have to look no further than into our own hearts to find God. Keep Jesus word, you’ll live your best life and God will live in you.
