1 Corinthians 13:6 – February 12, 2020

[Love] does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. 1 Corinthians 13:6 NABRE

Chapter 13 of Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, is his great treatise on love. It is probably the most admired and read text of any of the scriptures. Many marriage ceremonies contain the words of this chapter. Paul is speaking about love, what love is and what love is not. Love is very active, it can be something we think and believe but we can only express love through action. If we love, we do. Paul through the entire chapter speaks about love. In the verse quoted we first see that love does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. Love is highly sensitive to wrongdoing, when we love we are concerned with injustice for all, we are concerned with the wounding of all, we are offended by the offending of others. Who the “others” are shouldn’t matter as disciples of Jesus, followers are called to love everyone. The one who loves always wishes a blessing. On the other hand when confronted with what is true, the one who loves rejoices in the truth. Truth is contrasted with wrongdoing, truth here means to have truthful conduct, morally upright behavior, beautiful and exemplary deeds. There is no envy or jealousy because love unites one with all the good in the beloved. Living in society, to rejoice in the truth means to support all social initiatives that respect the dignity of the human person and the common good.

How often do we see the success of another, perhaps in our same field or office, or maybe our same family and we become somewhat jealous or envious. This should be a flag that our love is not true for the other. When we love, we do bless the beloved and rejoice in their success. Our life is for the other and love should be how we see the good done by others.

Do you rejoice for others? Do you applaud others success?

When we love, we do bless the beloved and rejoice in their success. Our life is for the other and love should be how we see the good done by others. Click To Tweet
