Luke 14:13-14 – November 27, 2019

Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous. Luke 14:13-14 NABRE

Jesus is teaching about the Christian system of life. Jesus expects us to live a life where it is not quid pro quo (which has been in the news much of late.) Jesus expects us to give what we have to those who need. We have become immersed in a society where you pay for what you receive, a system that seems fair, and equitable. It is what the American economy is based upon, seemingly rewarding those who work hard and suppressing those who are looking for a handout. But actually it is a system of privilege, and while a few may breakout of poverty into richer economic ranks, for the most part the comfort of our lives depends a great deal on how we came into the world, how are parents lived and succeeded and the kind of breaks we have been able to receive establishing our economic positions. While we think all this is fair, it holds many underprivileged back and doesn’t share what appears to be an abundant economy equitably. It seems Jesus is aware of this kind of failure in economic systems because Jesus view is we should give to those who can’t respond quid quo pro. We should have a party inviting those who are not ever invited to the party. We should give to those who give us nothing in return, we should help those who are needy and poor, we should love those whose love in return carries no gift, just love.

Jesus wants us to live in a Christian system that lifts others and helps those in need. It is not a system where individuals rise to the top, but a system where everyone rises, and all can eat, live and enjoy life comfortably.

Do you expect repayment when giving? Do you help those who can’t help you?

Jesus desires a Christian system lifting others, helping those in need. Not a system where individuals rise to the top, but a system where everyone rises, all can eat, live and enjoy life comfortably. Click To Tweet
