When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me. And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning. John 15:26-27 NABRE
Jesus knows His time on earth is nearing its end and He is instructing His disciples. He tells them when He goes He will send the Spirit of the Father to them. The Spirit is the Spirit of truth, and this truth comes from the Father. The Father’s Spirit will testify to Christ. The Spirit will work in the disciples to share the truth about Christ and His purpose. Once the Spirit is received by the disciples they will testify to Christ. They will spread the word of Jesus that they know because they were with Him from the beginning of His public ministry. The disciples will face hostility; just as the world has tried to destroy Jesus the world will also try to destroy His followers. But the disciples will not be helpless when they face the world’s hostility, they will have the Spirit. The Spirit dwells inside the disciples, She will teach them about the risen Jesus, impressing His truth upon their hearts, making it come alive in them. The Spirit will sustain and empower the disciples who will meet the world’s hostility with this power and testify to Jesus.
This same Spirit that dwells in the disciples dwells in us. We have the Spirit of the Father within us and through Her we have the power to meet any hostility and know what to say and do. We too can testify to Jesus, sharing His truth for all to hear. The disciples are good witnesses because they were with Jesus from the beginning, but we too can be good witness by trusting the Spirit of truth that dwells in us, leading us to understand the mystery of Jesus life.
