Jesus has been teaching His disciples about the great love between the Father and Himself. They have an intimate relationship, a mutual knowing. Jesus teaches He has a similar intimate relationship, mutual knowing with them. Now Jesus is teaching them about a profound love between the Father, Himself and the disciples. “As, the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love.” From all eternity the Father intimately loves the Son, pouring forth all that He is into the Son and teaching Him everything. Jesus loves His disciples with the same infinite, self-giving love. He is drawing His disciples into this unimaginable communion of love between the Father and the Son and invites them to remain in that love. This verse follows Jesus teaching on the “vine and the branches,” where he tells them they cannot survive without remaining connected to the vine, Him. Going on He declares as the branches are to remain on the vine, the disciples are to remain in Jesus’ love, His communion, which includes the love of the Father. He tells them if they keep His commandments they remain in His love, just as He has kept the Father’s commandments. For Jesus obedience demonstrates love and communion. Thus they will share in His love, and they will have joy, a divine joy that comes from knowing the Father and experiencing His love.
For Jesus love is at the heart of life. He loves His Father, His disciples and us. We are invited to love them all in the same way. It is through love that a connection is made called communion, we are in Jesus and Jesus is in us. Which means we are in the Father and the disciples and one another. Love is the great conduit of communion.
Do you hear Jesus telling you He loves you? Do you realize Jesus’ love comes with all who He loves?
