John 17:17 – September 13, 2019

Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth. John 17:17 NABRE
.
Jesus is asking God to consecrate His disciples. Consecration is the language of setting things and people apart, making them holy and sacred, dedicating them to a special service for the Lord. Jesus Himself was consecrated, “can you say that the one whom the Father has consecrated and sent into the world blasphemes because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? (John 10:36) So Jesus is bringing the same holiness that the Father set on Him to His disciples. Just as the Father has sent Jesus into the world, so too the disciples are to be consecrated and sent into the world. Jesus specifically prays that they be consecrated into the truth, meaning into Himself, which is both the Father’s word and truth. He prays that they would be wrapped in the Fathers love, making them holy and empowering them for their mission into the world. First Jesus must go to the cross and complete the mission that the Father has sent him to accomplish. Jesus offers himself as the scapegoat expressing to all that God is a God of love who will do anything to show His love for His creation.  Jesus teaches us that God loves us so much that He will enter humanity, suffer, die and be resurrected so that we too may be resurrected and know the love of God.

We can pray for consecration for ourselves to live and accomplish Jesus mission in the world. We can do the work Jesus requires of us and live in a special way as disciples. We too know the word and the truth and so ask God that we be embraced in love, making us holy and empowering us for the mission He needs us to accomplish. To be consecrated is to be blessed then sent.

Do you want to be consecrated to do the work of God? Are you living the mission Jesus desires of you?

We can pray for consecration for ourselves to live and accomplish Jesus mission in the world. Share on X
