Jeremiah 17:14 – September 2, 2019

Heal me, LORD, that I may be healed; save me, that I may be saved, for you are my praise. Jeremiah 17:14 NABRE

Jeremiah is a prophet who has to speak truth to power and no one wants to hear what he has to say. Jeremiah has to condemn the people because of their sins of idolatry and he has to tell them the Lord will abandon Israel. He proclaims that the people who turn away from God will be written in the earth. The wind will blow their names away and they will have no place in the book of life. Jeremiah follows the Lord’s instruction and proclaims trouble to the people but the people don’t see Jeremiah’s prophecy coming true. The people jeer and call his bluff. Jeremiah doesn’t want disaster he only proclaims it because it is God’s instruction to him. Jeremiah asks for healing and saving, because what he does is for the praise of God. If God could have his prophecy come true then Jeremiah will feel justified. No matter what, Jeremiah finds refuge in God and wants those who persecute him to be put to shame and feel destruction. Jeremiah is an example of trusting in the Lord and feeling safe in the Lord, despite all the trouble he is having personally. Jeremiah always finds safe haven in God. He trust God and knows doing Gods will, even if he does not see predictions coming to reality, is the best course of action for his life.

When God wants us to do something, we can’t assume we know the reason or the result God is hoping to accomplish. God needs us to do what He asks, as He asks, even if it results in rejection for us. Rejection may be what God was seeking. We must follow the model of Jeremiah, trust the Lord and don’t be swayed by common opinion.

Do you hear God asking you to serve him in some way? Are you ready to do the will of God even if it means you will be shamed?
