1 Peter 5:6 – July 18, 2019

So humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time. 1 Peter 5:6 NABRE

It is difficult to imagine the mighty hand of God exalting us. God is God and we are not. Yet, Peter tells us in his closing of the letter to the communities in Asia Minor that if we humble ourselves God will exalt us in due time. The blessing of God can be upon those who are humble. Jesus spoke about being humble, “Whoever exalts themselves will be humbled, but whoever humbles themselves will be exalted.” (Matthew 23:13) To be humble is to be modest or not let our own self-importance take control of our persona. Some synonyms are; meek, respectful, submissive, self-effacing, unassertive, unpresuming. In our culture today we want to present ourselves as beautiful, important, popular and the most intelligent, these synonyms are almost offensive, certainly not anything to aspire to. But, this is the attitude that God, Jesus even Peter tell us and advise to have because it will be the path to blessing and to be exalted by God. So while the people of today seek their own fame, being humble will bring us God’s raising up, making us powerful and high ranking to Him. God will hold us in high regard! Humility leads us to putting others first, and loving our neighbor, both highly important to God. As disciples we can make others come first, and let them discover the path to be exalted by God as well.

All God’s desires for us lead us to have a happier life, a life here and now that takes away stress, pressure and the seeking of the wrong kind of praise. Praise from people gets us nothing. But being exalted by God is praise that comes with amazing support and aide from the One who can truly lift us up.

Do you look for praise and accolades from those you don’t know? Can you put others first leading to your own humility?
