Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 NABRE
Jesus is saying goodbye to His friends, but he is not saying goodbye forever. He wants them to carry the faith they have for God over to Him. He is returning to His Father’s house and He promises to prepare a home for them. Once He has a home prepared for them He will return to take them with Him, promising wherever He is they will be too. The disciples do not know where this home is or the way to get there. Jesus tells them He is the way. Jesus is the way because through Jesus the human and the divine meet, to meet the Father the human must meet the divine. Jesus is truth, He is the self-expression of God, so meeting the resurrected Christ we meet the truth. As Jesus returns for the disciples (and us as this passage is meant for all who die seeking the truth) then God is met. Jesus is life because He is the firstborn of the dead, Jesus dies to rise and defeat death and by so doing defeats death for all of us. Therefore if we are to meet the Father we do so through Jesus because He is the self-expression of God, the meeting of the human and the divine and only those living can meet the Father, he is not a God of the dead. Knowing Jesus we know the Father. Jesus says seeing Him we have seen the Father.
This teaching may lead us to proclaim that Jesus is the only way to meet God. I am not sure this is a statement about exclusivity. But, more of us know Jesus than are in the church. John tells us Jesus is love and so if we know love we know Jesus, the way, the truth and the life.
Do you realize your life is searching for home? Jesus wants to prepare home for us, do you believe Jesus will return for us and lead us home?
