Romans 11:33 – June 16, 2019

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways! Romans 11:33 NABRE

In the heart of the letter to the community at Rome Paul is arguing that God is faithful to His word even when Israel is not. He will maintain in the chapter with the quoted verse that God’s love for his covenant people endures so much that “all of Israel will be saved” (11:26). How this will be is a mystery leaving Paul in awe. But in the end Israel and the Gentiles stand together in a single family of faith, owing everything to the mercy of God. The chapter ends with Paul praising God. In this final hymn Paul marvels at the genius and generosity that shines through the mystery revealed and the mercy promised to all. Paul says, divine wisdom cannot be searched to the bottom. Only the Spirit can fathom the limitless reaches of God’s limitless mind. Even when God’s purposes seem visible, human understanding is woefully short and inadequate of understanding. Paul emphasizes the point almost by repeating himself saying, how inscrutable are God’s judgments and how unsearchable God’s way. He goes on to ask rhetorically, who knows the mind of God, who has been His counselor. Paul notes all things are from Him, through Him and for Him, to Him be glory forever. Paul is showing this awe and thorough respect for God and all he does and knows. We rely on Paul to explain the message of God’s plan for salvation and Paul is telling us it is impossible to truly know what God has planned.

Paul’s witness is beautiful. If we could understand God it would mean He is not smarter than us. Would we really want to follow a God that we could understand or comprehend? Especially since we know everything comes from God.

Do you believe you understand God? Are you certain about the things God knows?
