The beginning of wisdom is fear of the LORD, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 9:10 NABRE
The book of Proverbs opens with an invitation to meet Wisdom. We should desire a total dedication to the pursuit of Wisdom. We should ignore those that would distract us, or wicked people who would try to convince us of better ways to have fun. The point is made from the start, the beginning of wisdom is fear of the Lord. A message that we interpret as respect for the Lord. Knowing the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. We look at God who established the foundations of the world, He created the heavens and the earth, He made the rain and the sun. Knowing all this can only lead to a desire to know more and be more informed on all that God does and has done. Which is the second part of the verse, knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. So to understand we must have wisdom, which starts with respect for the Lord. We all have our part to play. The formation of Christian community helps to bring knowledge and understanding because we have others in our circle who can challenge us, and who we can help become wise. The practice of fraternal correction is useful; correction should encourage us that we can improve and grow in wisdom.
We don’t need to be a bible scholar, or be steeped in spiritual moments of experience to be close to God. God is a wisdom that makes all people understand. A little knowledge leads to more understanding and the gaining of wisdom. What we gain in wisdom brings us better knowledge and understanding. So don’t be afraid of what you do not know, focus on the first step, respect the Lord, by filling your heart with the desire for wisdom.
Do you respect all that the Lord is able to accomplish? Do you grow in understanding as you draw nearer to God?
God is a wisdom that makes all people understand. A little knowledge leads to more understanding and the gaining of wisdom.
