Isaiah 48:17 – May 8, 2019

Thus says the LORD, your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I am the LORD, your God, teaching you how to prevail, leading you on the way you should go. Isaiah 48:17 NABRE

Isaiah the prophet is sharing news from God about the people who are in exile being freed thanks to the kindness of Cyrus, King of Persia. Cyrus defeated the Babylonians who held the Jews in captivity. He goes on to declare Cyrus is influenced by God to free the Jews. It is God who acts on behalf of the Jews, having them freed and letting them return to Jerusalem after their long exile. Some had the mistaken feeling that perhaps Cyrus was the Messiah. The quoted verse has God declare I am the Lord, your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. The Jews were in exile because of disobedience and not trusting God. Jerusalem was destroyed and the people would have felt God had abandoned them. God is declaring that He is their Lord, redeemer, Holy One. The people will prevail, succeed over all others because of God’s teaching and God will lead them. After a time of being “punished” God is ready to work again with the Jews to help them be believers and have faith in God. God never abandons His creation and is always ready to teach those who accept God as their God.

This message leads us to understand that God is always there to help, to teach and to lead. We may think God has abandoned us, or that God does not care about our day-to-day activities. But God is always ready to help those who call upon him in belief. We learn later that God is our redeemer as well through the sending of his Son who sheds blood so we may know that God will do anything to clear a relationship between Himself and ourselves.

Do you see comparison between the Jews of a long time ago who were unfaithful and Christians today? Do you allow God to teach and lead you?

This message leads us to understand that God is always there to help, to teach and to lead. We may think God has abandoned us, or that God does not care about our day-to-day activities. Click To Tweet
