Better one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere. Psalms 84:11 NABRE
Psalm 84 reads from the point of view of someone who wishes to dwell in the house of God. At the time many people were required and went on Pilgrimages to Jerusalem with the temple and this psalmist would love to go and even stay there. The psalmist says in the quoted verse that even one day in the court of God is better than a thousand days anywhere else, indicating a preference to stay there forever. The psalmist feels anyone who trusts in God is blessed, that the Lord gives every good thing, and there is a beauty in the Lord that is unsurpassed anywhere else in the world. This psalmist has a great desire to be with God in God’s house to the exception of everything else, this alone would be pleasing. This is a psalm that should be used as a prayer for those wanting to go to church. If you have a desire to participate in a service and seeing the overwhelming desire expressed in this psalm will fuel your wanting to go to church. We are so blessed with so many churches and services that it is always possible to attend a church if we want. Meditating on this psalm we see someone who must go miles and miles and leave all their work and business just to be with God in God’s house praying that is all they want, all they desire to do. It makes our hurdles to get to church seem minor.
But there is another view, the true house of God is heaven. We should be yearning to be with God, face to face. Our desire every moment of every day should be for the halls of God’s house, to be always with God. We cannot achieve the joy that we will have when in God’s presence, it should be our desire, our yearning, and prayer. This is our true message to be completely with God, with God as our only desire.
