Psalms 143:10 – February 16, 2019

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. May your kind spirit guide me on ground that is level. Psalms 143:10 NABRE

Psalm 143 is about asking for mercy and help. The psalm begins with the psalmist asking the Lord to listen to him and then he explains his predicament. The psalm continues where the psalmist asks God to please respond, to rid him of his enemies and for God to make known His ways so the psalmist can follow Him. The psalm ends appealing to the name of the Lord and begging for the Lord’s steadfast love. When it is all said and done the psalmist wants to be the servant of God. We see in the quoted verse the psalmist asking God to teach him how to do God’s will and to let the spirit guide him. This is a strong line, one that reminds us of Jesus who promises to send the Spirit once he returns to the Father. The first disciples received God’s Spirit and were blessed with the gifts of the Spirit; wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, prophecy, tongues and others. Jesus in promising the Spirit speaks to the disciples about the Spirit of Truth saying, “when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth.” (John 16:13) In Romans we read, “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.” (8:14) We are not expected to be experts, to have wisdom, to be competent in the word of God to become servants. God through the Holy Spirit will teach us what we need to know to be a servant of the Lord and to do His will.

We depend on God to teach us, to give us support and to be with us always as we live to serve God. We begin with faith, then ask for help and remain open to God’s response. God wants us to know and to live to do His will. Becoming servants we are children of God.

Do you ask for the Spirit in your life? What skills are required to be a servant of God?
