Philippians 1:6 – February 15, 2019

I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6 NABRE

Paul is writing to the community in Philippi, a community to whom he feels very close and is pleased with their progress growing in fellowship. Paul is writing this letter while a prisoner in Rome, yet he speaks of his thanks and joy. He is thinking of them and not of his own situation. He is reminded of them and prays for them, particularly about their partnership for the gospel from the first day. Paul recognizes in the community the work of God. Even though he is miles away, without freedom, he feels very much a part of them. Paul knows the real work has come from God. Because the community was open, and ready perhaps for something better, they allowed the Spirit to work in their lives. The love that Paul expresses is evident reading the opening to this letter. Paul tells them the work began in them will continue until the return of Jesus. Paul calls for their love to increase and that the Spirit move to deepen them and continue to help their growth. This seems to be a source of joy in Paul to know that God was still working in the lives of this community of believers. This is the real basis for joyful Christian fellowship to have God work in our lives each day.

Christian community should have the feeling of closeness as we see in Paul and the community at Philippi. Sometimes the local church becomes too big so it is important to make small groups, places in the church where you feel known, where people know you by name. They are also places where you can help and guide one another. Most churches today have small groups, it is good if you belong. It is a place where God can continue to work in you.

Do you feel joy in your church community? Are you able to join a small group?
