Romans 8:28 – February 13, 2019

We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 NABRE

Paul in this section of the letter to the community in Rome addresses suffering and coming glory. Paul balances the current era with a coming era that will make all, including suffering, turn to glory. But, there is also the point as a follower of God, if we love God, all things can be used for good. God does not cause suffering, it is the sinfulness of human nature that brings on misfortune, suffering and pain. Through our connection to one another we are effected by sin. If one sins, that sin effects the community of believers. God does not stop the sin, or the suffering and pain that comes from sin, but God uses all, including suffering for good. You may have an experience of pain but as a follower of God, a lover of God, that experience can be converted to good in your life. Suffering is inescapable, it occurs all through humanity. By embracing suffering and trials, even consenting to them, we are brought more closely to Christ. It becomes a means to release our own selfishness and surrender completely to the Lord. We discover we are not in control and thus accept God’s will for our lives. It has been said that nothing new can be learned by our successes after the age of thirty, but in stumbling and suffering we grow. Paul is telling us there is good that God will draw from suffering.

Some things seem very painful, some losses hurt so much. But by remaining close to God we will be brought to a goodness in our suffering. Remaining a lover of God, we will be shown how our loss has turned to glory. God uses all for good and His purpose. Staying close to God will allow us to see God’s purpose.

Have you struggled with suffering? Are there examples when you have seen good come from something bad?
