Psalms 105:1 – February 2, 2019

Give thanks to the LORD, invoke his name; make known among the peoples his deeds! Psalms 105:1 NABRE

The love God shows His people celebrated in this psalm is contrasted by the people’s sin. But the psalm proclaims God is mindful of His covenant. So this psalm opens by proclaiming, “Give thanks to the LORD, invoke his name, make known among the peoples his deeds!” It goes on to sing praises to Him and tell all of His wonderful works. All the created world reflects the glory of God. God has dominion over all the earth. God looks after all the living things He has made. He gives a special land to His people and fills them with joy. After the opening praises the remainder of the psalm gives an early history of the people, starting with the covenant God made with Abraham, and the promise to find them land. This promised covenant to the people is an everlasting covenant which was fulfilled bringing the people out of Egypt and giving them the Promised Land. But God took the covenant further, it began as a promise to the nation of Israel and it was finally fulfilled in a new covenant, fulfilled by the coming of Jesus. Jesus shared his blood fulfilling the eternal covenant, one sacrifice standing forever between God and every individual. In the end this psalm is fulfilled in Christ.

God becomes known by our proclaiming all His wonderful deeds and telling people His name. We have been given much thanks to God and for our part we are asked to live in such a way that we glorify God’s name. People should see our good works and give thanks to our Father who made us and continues to do wonderful works. We should remain ever mindful of the covenant God has made with us and that He is always present in our lives.

Do you make known the works of God in your life? Do you honor God’s name by how you live?
