Colossians 1:16 – December 27, 2018

For in him were created all things in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things were created through him and for him. Colossians 1:16 NABRE

Paul is writing to the Christian Community in Colossae, it is not a community he founded. This community was evangelized by Paul’s disciple Epaphras. He is writing because the community is under threat by the emergence of a local so-called philosophy, a world view mixing Jewish tradition, pagan folk religion and Christianity. This philosophy purports to offer greater protection against evil cosmic powers than the gospel taught by Paul. It is a minor threat but Paul reminds the community that they are in the need of the gospel of Christ to which they were converted. The letter stresses the universal, indeed cosmic sovereignty of Christ. Jesus is described as the first born, for in him were created all things, in heaven and earth (that is everything) the visible and invisible (another way to say everything), thrones, dominions, principalities or powers (earthly rulers and authorities as well as angelic) all is created through and for him. So Christ has authority over everything, good and evil. Through Jesus and for Jesus the Father created everything, the whole world, its beauty, complexity, and mystery. The eternal Son is the goal of all creation. Jesus draws all things to Himself. The story of everything is from Jesus and for Jesus to draw in. Jesus is the true cosmic sovereignty.

Jesus encapsulates and encloses everything. “The story” of everything is contained within Jesus. We are a small thread in “the story.” We must move from my story, to our story (connected to others,) to “the story.” We end up in Christ eternally.

Are you aware you are part of something bigger? Do you seek connection to Jesus?
