1 Peter 4:8 – October 28, 2018

Above all, let your love for one another be intense, because love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8 NABRE

Peter is writing this letter to several communities who have become followers of Jesus. He is telling them that they must imitate Jesus. In so doing they will suffer trials and persecution as Jesus did. Peter speaks of Jesus being victorious in suffering, He conquered sin through the cross. Peter exhorts them to do the will of the Father as Jesus did, to avoid the sins of the world particularly making life a party, simply making it all about fun. Whatever we do in this life we will need to account for it in time. So Peter tells them that they should be ready for the return of Jesus. To live as if Jesus could return at any moment, this will be the fulfillment of God’s plan. Peter says be serious and sober in prayer, let your love for one another be intense, because love covers a multitude of sins, and be hospitable to one another without complaining. To pray, to love, to be welcoming, this is the mission of the church. We pray to have a relationship with God. We love so that others will know they are loved by God, and in our love we overlook any offenses others may do, we give them the benefit of the doubt. To be welcoming means we make our church friendly and irresistible to others, so they may find a home with us and in Jesus. It is by our action that others come to know Jesus.

Peter speaking to the church at the time is telling them to be ready for Jesus return, He could come at any time. As followers of Jesus we should be ready as well. It is as important we pray, love and welcome others so they will know the Kingdom of God and become members. We have a good thing in Jesus, we need to share.
