Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you. Jeremiah 1:5 NABRE
Jeremiah was a prophet who lived during the time of the rise of the Babylonian empire which became a threat to the Israelites and eventually led to the destruction of Jerusalem. He prophesizes impending disaster because of infidelity to God. In the opening verses we hear the call of Jeremiah. It is an account that gives an idea of the mystery of every divine call. It is a call where God makes known to the soul the plan and purpose of her life. No one comes from nothing. Everyone has a purpose in God’s providence. God in creating the person speaks about forming us, like a potter forms clay. God knew us before even forming us. God knows what our mission will be in life. To know in biblical language is to understand the person, to know their roots, their journey, to know someone in a deep intimate relationship. God also dedicated us, consecrated us, anointed us for the service we would have in God’s kingdom. God’s plan for us, made before we are born, emerges in due course, when we are ready to take God’s assignment, when we are the right age, and have the depth necessary to know God’s call for us. There is a set time when the mystery of our calling is revealed. It is a journey God knew before we were born.
We don’t come from nothing. We come from God who depends on us to do something that will advance the plan of kingdom creation. When God formed us, placing our soul into the parts contributed by our parents, God knew the life we would have, he knew the number of hairs that would be on our head. We don’t come from nothing, we are formed by God who needs us and loves us.
Do you seek to know yourself as well as God knows you? Can you see your mission in service to the kingdom of God?
