1 Peter 5:7 – October 24, 2018

Cast all your worries upon him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7 NABRE

Peter writes to five regions, that he names at the beginning of the letter, to prepare them for suffering in imitation of Christ. Peter writes telling them they have a new identity in Christ, the new way they should relate to people inside and outside the church and to be ready to undergo affliction for their faith. The quoted verse comes from the letter’s closing exhortation which has a unifying theme of humility. Peter is exhorting the audience to have an underlying humility with each other and with God. He points out God opposes the proud and they should humble themselves so God will exalt them in due time. Then he tells them give their worries to God. Peter is adapting Psalm 55:23 for the early Christians; “Cast your care upon the LORD, who will give you support.” Worries, can mean anxiety or cares; it is the cares of the world that can choke off growth in God’s Word. This is still true for us today, we hold on to our daily burdens and they keep us from growing in God. Peter says cast them, throw them, it is an active step in unburdening ourselves, it is not simply a passive prayer hoping God will take our worries away. We should throw all our anxiety and worry on God, He genuinely cares about our welfare.

We must be open to being humble and throwing our worries on God’s big shoulders. We can’t passively pray about worries, we must cast them on God, holding nothing back. Cast and let it go, trust God will handle your cares. This letting go leads to peace. There is a saying attributed to @tonyrobbins, if you want to take the island, then burn the boats. To succeed we must believe, to find peace we must completely cast our worries on God.

Do you work on your humility? Can you “Let go and let God”?
