Psalms 34:8 – September 9, 2018

The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he saves them. Psalms 34:8 NABRE

Psalm 34 is a psalm of praise to the LORD. The psalmist opens praising the LORD and inviting others to praise as well. The psalmist shares personal experience about seeking the LORD and salvation; an invitation is extended to look to the LORD. The invitation begins with the quoted verse, “the angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he saves them.” In biblical language to fear the LORD is to demonstrate respect, to recognize the LORD as the source of life and through reverence show this understanding. The LORD has angels encamp for protection. This is a strong word, encamp, it paints an image of an army staying, not going anywhere, the angels are there to protect and guard and they will never go away. The Lord saves those who are His. Their life is forever safe. This protection would seem to be while in the desert or in homes and villages, but of course the LORD saves for all eternity. The next verse has a familiar line, “taste and see that the LORD is good.” It is a rich metaphor, taste creates an emotional response, our lips water and our stomach longs to be satiated. This is a description with a guttural response. God is so good our mouths water for Him. The psalmist goes on to convince us that we would be wise to seek refuge in the LORD.

The example of the psalmist should not be missed on us. The LORD is good, our protection and salvation, so we should invite others to know the LORD. We are all yearning for something and the psalm describes the target of our desire as the LORD. Reach out to others, invest in their lives and at the right moment invite them to meet God. Encourage others to taste the goodness of the LORD.

Do you rejoice in the LORD? Do you have the means to be in the lives of others and invite them to meet God?

The LORD is good, our protection and salvation, so we should invite others to know the LORD. We are all yearning for something and Psalm 34 describes the target of our desire as the LORD. Click To Tweet
