Strive for peace with everyone, and for that holiness without which no one will see the Lord. Hebrews 12:14 NABRE
The Letter to the Hebrews is called a letter, but in many places reads like a homily to be heard. It is rich and captures many themes. It opens informing that in the past God spoke through prophets and ancestors but now God speaks through His Son. Chapter twelve presents life as an endurance race, with growth toward maturity through the discipline of a loving father and liturgical assembly. Today’s verse wants peace for everyone, not the absence of conflict but harmony with others, even those who have inflicted injustice. Peace for ourselves and others is a fruit of God’s discipline which eventually brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness for those who are trained by it (12: 11). With peace in our hearts, we can attain holiness. @careynieuwhof in #DidntSeeItComing calls holiness a process of separating ourselves from the things that murder our soul. We are made holy through Christ’s sacrifice but must constantly keep our heart pure, and ready to see God. No one unclean can see God, so Christians work to become who you are, holy in Christ. Hebrews addresses our journey, a race, whose goal is to be face to face with God.
Does your own heart wage war or do you aspire toward peace. Can you find a way to be at peace with everyone? Check yourself; do you find yourself getting oppositional when you see a post from a different political point of view, do you drive to win on the highway or arrival in peace, do you step out of the way letting others go ahead or do you need to be first? These are small things, but it is the small things that murders the peace in our heart.
How can you be more at peace? Do you recognize that it is your heart that leads you to holiness? Can you protect your heart from waging wars?
